The Oregon Humane Society is located at 1067 NE Columbia Blvd. in Portland, Oregon. Behind the building is the oldest animal cemetery on the West Coast, founded around 1918(?).
The most famous resident of the animal cemetery is a farm collie, Bobbie of Silverton. He was lost by his owners while on vacation on August 15, 1923 at Wolcott, Indiana. He travelled approximately 2,500 miles over a period of six months to reach home. He returned to Silverton, Oregon on February 15, 1924. He died April 6, 1927, at only six years of age. He had become ill, and the hardships he had endured had taken their toll. After his homecoming in 1924, he lived a wonderful life with his family and friends, but all too short for those who loved and admired him.
Bobbie was buried behind a white picket fence under a white and red doghouse. I looked through the window on the north side of the doghouse to see a small concrete gravemaker.
A delightful, little book has been written documenting Bobbie's travels: "Silverton's Bobbie His Amazing Journey - The True Story" by Judith Kent. It is available in the Humane Society's Book Store along with a lots of other items.
Hours: Monday - Saturday 10 - 7; Sunday 12 - 7.
