The Diocese of Manchester was established April 15, 1884 by Pope Leo XIII. In 1853, New Hampshire Catholics became part of the Diocese of Portland, Maine, having previously been Catholics in the (Arch)diocese of Boston. Until 1808, the state of New Hampshire was under the jurisdiction of the Diocese of Baltimore, established by Pope Pius VI, and where John Carroll served as Bishop beginning in 1790.
