This statue is in the Public Garden on Boylston Street. The inscription on the statue stand reads as follows: Thomas Cass. Col. Ninth Mass. Infantry. U.S.V. Fell at Malvern Hill Virginia July first 1862.

Born in Queen's County (Laois), Thomas Cass was a successful businessman and member of the Boston School Committee. When the Civil War began, Massachusetts Governor Andrew asked Cass to form an Irish Regiment, the 9th Massachusetts Volunteers. Cass led the 9th Regiment, which fought bravely in the Civil War, and was himself fatally wounded at the Battle of Malvern Hill. He returned to Boston and died in 1862. An initial granite memorial of Cass was replaced by a bronze memorial created by artist Richard E. Brooks. It was dedicated in 1899 at a ceremony attended by Cass' son and daughter and survivors of the Civil War regiment. (This text was copied from website listed below)
