From the Tour 7 section of A South Dakota Guide:
The STATE SOLDIERS' HOME was established in 1889, and ten Civil War
veterans were the first patients. Several additions have been made tot he
original building. The present (1937) population is 112 men and 95 women.
Veterans of four wars--Civil, Indian, Spanish-American, and World--are now
admitted, and the wives and widows of these men are taken, if they have only a
limited amount of property and are 60 years old or more.
The State Soldiers' Home is now called Michael J. Fitzmaurice Veterans' Home.
The Veterans’ Home has 100 domiciliary beds and 50 nursing care beds in three
residential buildings located on 193 acres. It is operated by the South Dakota
Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. The Veterans’ Home offers an
excellent retirement environment for qualified couples, single veterans and
widows. When health problems arise they have medical services available to them
on a short term or long term basis.
Members pay a maintenance fee based on a percentage of income. It entitles
the member to receive a room, furnishings, utilities except telephone, bedding,
laundry of bedding and personal clothing, meals, medical services,
pharmaceutical services, activities and social services. A member is able to
retain a minimum monthly income. The home offers a variety of activities
for the residents.
