On December 13, 1862, during the Battle of Fredericksburg, Major General Ambrose E. Burnside with nine Federal divisions totaling 30,000 men assailed the ridge being defended by a Georgia brigade under Brigadier General Thomas R. R. Cobb. Not a single Union soldier reached the heights, though 8,000 fell in the attempt.
The Fredericksburg Battlefield Visitor Center at 1013 Lafayette Blvd., Fredericksburg is located at Marye's Heights and a walking tour is available.
