At May 22 -23, 1940 there have been heavy fights in Zelzate between the ‘2de Gidsen Regiment’ of Belgium and the German army. The ‘2de Gidsen Regiment’ was formed with 9 squadrons (with a total of 1500 soldiers). They couldn’t stop the enemy troops of breaking through and at May 28, Belgium capitulated after a battle of 18 days.
