Animas CO Cemetary Civil War Memorial - American Civil War Monuments and Memorials on Waymarking.com

A nice headstone placed here by BSA Troop 357. This cemetery dates back to the early 1900s. One gentleman purchased it for $10 and a bottle of whiskey. He then turned around and sold it to Animas City for $10, and kept the whiskey! Animas City is no longer there, as Durango has replaced it...but this cemetery lives on as a reminder of those olden days. This old cemetery is long forgotten now...no one keeps it up. It is land-locked and we had to get permission to pass over private land to get to it. A gentleman was kind enough to lead us through his backyard and point us in the right direction. Apparently a fire swept through in the 1980s, and destroyed most of the markers at the time, as they were mostly made from wood. What remains is a beautiful, lonely piece of land, with about 60 graves, and maybe about 20 markers. The grounds overlook the city of Durango, and the mountains surrounding.
