The William Hooper School was built in 1914 at the intersection of Meares Street and South 5th Street in Wilmington, NC. According to the Historic Wilmington Foundation, the brick Classical Revival style building's architect was Joseph F. Leitner. Wallace & Osterman built the school. The first principle from 1914 to 1925 was Eliza Meares (1864-1926). The school was used until 1984. In 1998 the school was converted to apartments for the elderly.

William Hooper (1742-1790) of Boston, Massachusetts, was a representative of North Carolina who signed the Declaration of Independence.
