James H. Lane - Boston, MA - Specific Veteran Memorials on Waymarking.com

On Castle Island Reservation, on the southeast edge of the shore with Boston Harbor and next to a monument to veterans of the Korean War, is a simple stone monument dedicated to James H. Lane.

The text on the marker reads:

"In Memoriam
James H. Lane
1934-2007
Veteran - Priest - Friend
There are some people whose absence
diminishes all of us permanently
because they are unique, they will
not come our way again
Father Jim Lane was such a person"

The obituary found on Boston.com started with the following: "For more than 30 years, the Rev. James H. Lane was the voice of comfort to police officers, their families, and countless people who took solace in the presence of the thin, prematurely gray priest from South Boston." He enlisted in the army after graduating from high school in 1952 (no additional information is given about his service). Starting in 1972, he was the Boston Police Department's first chaplain.

To reach the monument, park at the parking lot at the east end of the William J. Day Boulevard. Then walk down the southeasterly path, keeping the fort on your left to the monument at the end of the path and at the harbor.
