Two wildcats sit on either side of a private gated drive. Both cats are made of concrete and are sitting, ears up, tail curled around the back legs. The eyes of the cat on the proper left (aka Leona) are partly closed; the eyes of the cat on the proper right (aka Leona) are open. Both cats sit on concrete bases, whose approximate dimensions are 1 1/2 x 2 1/2 x 4 ft.

They have guarded this entrance since 1922 when they were built by the sculptor Robert Treat Paine for the writer Col. Charles Erskine Scott Wood and the poet Sara Bard Field. Wood and Field wanted a place where they and their guests could work undisturbed. So in 1919 they bought 34 acres of land where they could build their "Castle in the sky". Poet's Canyon was a gathering place for the "artistic people" of the time.
