Joe Fortes came to Vancouver in the 1885. A sailor from Barbados he remained here ultimately becoming the unofficial lifeguard of English Bay. He taught many early Vancouverite children how to swim.

Erected by the citizens and children, co-operating with the Kiwanis Club of Vancouver, commemorates the life and deeds of Joe Fortes, for many years the guardian of this beach.
