Welcome to Mendota - Cantaloupe Center of the World. The town was named by officials of the Southern Pacific Railroad and according to Mendotan Historians the name was "borrowed" from Mendota, Illinois. Fresno County in which Mendota is located is consistently the Number 1 producer of Cantaloupes which are grown in the area around Mendota and Firebaugh. Obviously Mendota claimed the appellation first.

There is another welcome sign at the south entrance to the city on both State Routes 33 and 180, the fountain at this location is under repair.
