The original red brick courthouse, which stood on this site was built in 1834 and stood until the current courthouse was built in 1900. Virginia architect Frank P. Lowbern designed the current courthouse which was built by J. E. Parish. The courthouse is the seat of government for Smyth County and along with General District and Circuit Courts it also houses offices of the Treasure, Commissioner or Revenue and several other county offices.
