Bells obviously have an association with churches. It is Hitchin Lookers' understanding, that the continental norm is for churches to have single bells and the peal or ring of bells is a British tradition. Churches would initially have had a single bell but as funds allowed, additional bells would have been added. This is a reference to a five bell peal. They are clearly not hand bells and there is a church within a stones throw of the pub.

This ia another Greene King generic. See also WMAMJX.
