Jack Dee Goode was born on February 17, 1947 in Winfield, Kansas to Samuel Benton Goode and Geneva Aretta Blanchard Goode. He was the brother of David L. Goode, owner of Jackie B. Goode's Uptown Cafe and Susie Goode Avery.

Jack was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1967 taking his basic training at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri. Upon completion of training as an infantryman specializing in small arms and machine guns, Jack was assigned to the First Infantry Division based at Fort Riley, Kansas, known as "The Big Red One". As with most army personnel serving in the 1960's, Jack was deployed to Vietnam. He was killed on April 21, 1968 in an engagement West of Saigon. Following is the official U.S. Army description of the engagement as it appears on the citation that accompanied the Silver Star awarded posthumously to him.

Goode, Jack D. Specialist Four E4 United States Army, Company D, 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry
Awarded: Silver Star
Date of Action: 21 April 1968
Theatre: Republic of Vietnam
Reason: For gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam: On this date, Specialist Goode was serving as a machinegunner with his company during a reconnaissance in force operation South of Lai Khe. As the unit maneuvered through an area of dense jungle, the point element was suddenly subjected to intense sniper fire from a well concealed enemy force. Specialist Goode immediately set up his machine gun in an advantageous position and began placing rapid and accurate fire on the insurgents. He soon had surpressed all enemy activity to his front, but was still receiving fire from Viet Cong located from the right flank of the friendly position. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Specialist Goode began running through the hail of hostile rounds to a position from which he could better engage this part of the enemy force. As the concentrated fire struck all around him, he became wounded and forced to the ground. Completely ignoring his wounds, Specialist Goode dauntlessly crawled to the desired location and continued delivering devastating fire on the Viet Cong. His selfless example of courage and initiative was an inspiration to his comrades and significantly contributed towards the rout of the hostile force. Specialist Four Goode's unquestionable valor in close combat against numerically superior hostile forces is in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
Authority: By direction of the President of the United States of America

Jack was also awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Air Medal and Four Army Commendation Medals among the fifteen decorations he was awarded by the South Vietnam and United States governments.
