Bolton Abbey is a private estate owned by Lord Devonshire. Although owned by the Duke there is public access to many acres of his land and there are many walking trails.

The estate runs along the length of the River Wharfe, which has woods on both sides of the river.

There are a number of footpaths along here and a couple of bridges that give access to both sides of the river.

This map shows the route of the different trails that can be followed. It also indicates the length of each trail but more importantly gives details of the terrain. It also indicates whether the path is accessible for pushchairs and wheel chairs.

This is a lovely part of the world and one of my favourite walking areas.

Although I usually do a fairly flat circuit round here there is also access to paths that go up into the hills on either side. These paths are not marked on this route.

For the more adventurous the Dales Way, am 84 mile long distance hiking path that goes from Ilkley to Bowness.

This map is near the Cavendish Pavilion Cafe at the start of the woods on the West side of the river. The nearest car park to here is Sandholme Car Par.

Although access to the estate is free, there roads are narrow with limited parking other than in the pay car parks. As of 2011 a day’s parking costs 6 pounds and covers all the car parks on the estate.

There is also very limited free car parking at Barden Bridge.
