The worlds boxing middleweight champion, Gene fullmer grew up in this area and learned to fight near here. He was awarded the boxer of the year in 1962. He won the middleweight championship from Sugar Ray Robinson on January 2 1957. He lost the title in a rematch on May 1 1957. In 1959, the National Boxing Association withdrew its recognition of Robinson as middleweight champion. Fullmer and fellow former middleweight champion Carmen Basilio fought for the vacant NBA title on August 28, 1959, and Fullmer won the crown when he TKOed Basilio in the 14th round. Fullmer's final record included 55 wins (24 by KO), 6 losses, and 3 draws. In 1959 Gene Fullmer KO 14 Carmen Basilio in what was called the Fight of the Year. The trophy is located inside the Gale Center museum at:
