Forest Park is 745 acres and one of the largest municipal parks in the nation. In 1884, Orick Herman Greenleaf donated 65 acres of land then H. Everett Barney donated his 178 acre estate to the City of Springfield for the establishment of a park. Several others also donated abutting parcels of land. When all the land was intact the City of Springfield commissioned Fredrick Law Olmsted to design a park-scape.
