The Sanford Mills Historic district is a collection of historic textile mill buildings formerly operated by the Sanford Mills Company. The district spans a seven and a half acre site on both sides of the Mousam River which powered the mill. The district has fourteen contributing building and two contributing structures, including eight wookd, brick or concrete mill buildings, two office buildings, two bridges ans several other buildings.
The mills were established by Thomas Goodall starting in 1867. The earliest existing building, a brick boiler house, dates to 1882. The last buildings to be constructed are huge concrete and metal buildings dating to 1925.
The mills closed after being sold to Burlington Mills Company which closed the mills.
Some of the buildings have been converted to other uses but most remain vacant and unused.
