The Shakers are a religious order which believed in pacifism, celibacy, and communal living. Hancock Shaker Village's mission is to preserve Shaker craftsmanship and culture.
The Hancock Shaker community began in 1783 and reached its peak membership in the 1840s. The community gradually dwindled to about 50 members in the early twentieth century. Today the buildings and grounds are maintained as a living museum under the direction of a board of trustees.
The wash house is located in a large red outbuilding near the center of the village. This large facility was operated by the Shaker women and served the entire Shaker community. The interior has marble floors for good drainage, a fireplace for heating water, and water powered, belt-driven, washing machines.
