"A high relief carving of a pioneer family, with a father, a mother, and a young boy, in front of their covered wagon. A horse is grazing beside the wagon. The mother is kneeling and facing to the front; the father looks toward the west with his proper right hand raise to shield his eyes from the sun. The sculpture is carved from a block of marble composed of six smaller blocks. The back is carved with a map of the area covered by the Oregon Trail, and scenes of pioneer life." -Smithsonian Art Inventory Catalogue

This white marble carving is found on the west side of the base of the steps that lead to the Oregon State Capitol building. On the opposite side of the steps is the similar Lewis & Clark carving.
