This sculpture is based on a bench that appeared in photographs of the Wright brother's first flight. On the bench rest two bowler style hats as worn by the Wright brothers, Wilbur and Orville.

The bench has been placed across from the artist's larger "Flyover" sculpture.

This sculpture is one of nine benches placed at sites around Dayton. The other benches can be found at:

  • Carillon Historical Park
  • Dave Hall Plaza (this bench)
  • Dayton International Airport
  • Engineers Club of Dayton
  • Medal of Honor Park at Wright Patterson Airforce Museum
  • U.S. Airforce Museum
  • Woodland Cemetery
  • Wright Brothers Airport
  • Wright State University
Each location has a relationship to the Wright Brothers. The first bench was dedicated July 4, 1996.

From the Smithsonian AIC Inscription:

(On bench, seat edge front:) Dedicated to the immortal spirit of Daytonians Orville & Wilbur Wright.

(On bench, seat edge back:) Whose Gift of powered flight lifted our world forever skyward.

(On railing under seat:) This bench commemorates the 1996 Regional Bicentennial. Commissioned by CD'96/Funded by the Montgomery County Regional Arts and Cultural District. unsigned
