Starkey-McCully Block - Salem, Oregon - U.S. National Register of Historic Places on Waymarking.com

Using California Gold Rush earnings, John L. Starkey and Asa McCully opened their first general store in Salem in 1858, at the corner of Commercial and State streets (now the location of the Ladd-Bush Bank Building).

They opened their second store at this location in 1867, the building now known as the Starkey-McCully Block. In the years since, other tenants have included grocery stores, shoe repair, a harness shop, furniture sales, hardware, a restaurant and auto supplies.

This building originally extended south to the end of the block, a total of 120 feet; today, the northern three out of five stores (ten bays equal to 70 feet) remain. Six of the ten second story windows are now "blinded" with wooden panels.

The cast iron facade was made by Oregon Iron Works (Portland) and is thought to be the oldest remaining example in Oregon.

A large, vertical-oriented sign currently fixed to the building reads "This Building For Sale."
