This building is one of several brick structures associated with Patrick J. Ryan, whose prior experience with fires led him to insist on owning fire proof brick buildings. Historically, this building has also been thought of as the B.F. Dowell Law Office, but it is now considered likely that the Dowell law office was actually located immediately to the south. Ryan rented this building out to other proprietors. In 1868 it served as a hotel and by 1871, a restaurant. After reverting back to service as a hotel from 1873 to 1883, the building was an "ice cream saloon" for a time. Today, the building is home to a wine tasting room.

Additional information about this structure can be found on the State of Oregon Inventory of Historic Properties form.
