The original name for Jacksonville was "Table Rock City" and this building is one of the few references you can find to that title. Built in 1860, the building was erected for John Wintjen and Herman von Helms, German immigrants who operated one of the new town's most successful bakeries as well as saloons. Originally the building did not include the brick balustrade; it was added by the early 1880s, along with the Table Rock Billiard Saloon sign. Along with the saloon, a cobbler shop shared the building. Helms's son Ed Helms closed the saloon in 1914. In the 1960s a fire destroyed the interior, but by the early 1970s, restoration efforts resulted in a new interior.
Today the building is home to the Good Bean Coffee Company.
