The Sexton's Tool House is considered an eligible contributing structure and is located within another eligible contributing property, the Jacksonville Cemetery. The shed was built by John Hockenjos and George Holt (a prominent bricklayer whose work includes the United States Hotel and the County Courthouse.) The reported date of construction varies by source: State of Oregon Inventory of Historic Properties form contains contradicting dates: 1859 (which seems unlikely given that the cemetery was not dedicated until 1860) and 1878. A marker near the building describes restoration efforts and notes the construction date as 1868.
