The McAndrews-Barnum Block is one of the largest 19th century buildings still standing in downtown Medford. It is divided into two tax lots and features three storefronts with the eastern two owned separately from the western. The
nomination form for the Medford Downtown Historic District also describes the eastern and western portions as separate contributing structures, though built at the same time and with a common facade.
The structure was built around 1895 on lots owned by William S. Barnum and Thomas McAndrews. Various tenants occupied the block in the early years, including a bicycle shop, harness company, shoe store and second hand store. The upper floor contained furnished rooms for rent.
During World War II, the upper story was known as the Rex Hotel. Today the eastern storefronts are occupied by an advertising company, yoga studio and a beer seller.
