Waller-Chamberlin House - Court Street-Chemeketa Street Historic District - Salem, Oregon - NRHP Historic Districts - Contributing Buildings on Waymarking.com

The Waller-Chamberlin house, built around 1860, is believed to be the oldest house in the Court-Chemeketa Historic District. The house was originally built on State Street, likely just east of 16th street. The house is thought to have been built for Alvin Waller, a pioneer Methodist missionary who was an advocate for Willamette University. Waller Hall, the oldest building on the Willamette University campus, is listed individually on the National Register of Historic Places.

In 1893, Martin L. Chamberlin, a relation to the Waller family by marriage, moved the house to this subdivision. Chamberlin, whose business was real estate, was the son of a pioneer family and was elected Salem City Treasurer in 1879, Marion County Clerk in 1880 and State Senator in 1886. He later served on the Board of Directors of the Salem Public School system and was appointed as Clerk of the State Land Board in 1900.

In 1912, the house was moved again to its current lot. The original Italianate balconies were removed from the house at that time and the current Colonial Revival front porch was added. Other than restoring the original double door entry, the house has not been altered significantly since this period.
