This Gothic Revival style church building was erected in 1894 as an extension of the Zion Evangelical Church (which was located at the corner of Center and Liberty streets). For a time, church services at the downtown church were conducted in German while English-language services were held at this East Salem location. Evangelical services were held here for the last time in 1929 as the church united with Salem First church as a single Evangelical Church in a new building erected in 1915 at the downtown Center & Liberty site. This building was then used by the Salem Mennonite Church and later the LDS Reorganized church. At the time of the Historic District nomination, the building had been vacant for many years - today it is a private residence.
