This house was built around 1910 by lumber magnate Charles K. Spaulding for his son, Walter Spaulding. Walter, a lawyer, married Nettie J. Miller and after his death in 1943, his widow Nettie continued to live here until about 1981. The house served as the venue for the marriage of two-time Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling's wedding to Ava Helen Miller, who was a relative of Nettie (Miller) Spaulding. In 1982, Pauling visited this house during a visit to Salem to deliver a lecture at Willamette University.
