This Bungalow was built in 1912 for S.G. Hogue and his wife. Hogue was in the investment business and owned the house until selling to Bertha (Roth) Barnett and her husband Loren in 1916. Mrs. Barnett was a sister of Emil and Theodore Roth, whose family grocery business still continues through a number of Salem area stores. The Barnett's daughter, Leolyn, worked as secretary for Oregon Governors Snell, Hall, McKay, Patterson, Smith and Mark Hatfield. She served as Hatfield's secretary in Washington D.C. when he became a U.S. Senator. As a boy, Hatfield lived next door and remarked at the time that he would like to become Governor some day with Leolyn as his secretary. A little more than 20 years later, it actually happened.
