Building #33 / Yaquina Hall - Oregon State Hospital Historic District - Salem, Oregon - NRHP Historic Districts - Contributing Buildings on Waymarking.com

Known as "Building #33" and "Yaquina Hall," this structure was designed by Salem architect Lyle Pascoe Bartholomew, whose other works included the Capitol Journal Building and Beth Shalom Synagogue in Salem. Constructed in 1947, this 51,720 square-foot building originally served as the nurses dormitory for Oregon State Hospital. Part of the hospital's north campus, only about one-third of Building 33 is currently utilized, housing Department of Human Services staff.

The future of the building is uncertain as the north campus is effectively a liability to the state; the buildings are mostly vacant and even with extensive renovation for seismic retrofit, asbestos and lead paint removal, and re-work of pluming and electrical systems, finding a suitable use for the buildings would be difficult due to their specialized design for specific hospital purposes. Instead, a recent consultant study suggests that the campus is best suited for redevelopment, primarily as a residential space.
