In the mental hospital design plan popularized by Dr. Thomas Kirkbride, pleasant surroundings through well-designed landscaping was considered an integral part of therapy.

This portion of the campus contains many trees and a pair of "islands" within the internal network of access streets. One of the islands is surrounded by a number of parking spaces for designated public officials. There are a number of roughly life-size dog/wolf figures set up on various parts of the lawn - I'm not aware of their meaning.
