Built in 1909, Cottage #1 is one of three cottages located on the south side of the grounds west of the Oregon State Hospital's Kirkbride Building. While known as the Superintendent's House, the superintendent has not necessarily lived there - for many years the superintendent and family lived in the second story of the Kirkbride building. Most of the cottages, which are now used to provide transitional housing for patients preparing to return to the community, were renumbered as part of the Oregon State Hospital Project - this one is now designated as "R01."

Note to visitors: as there is no physical barrier between the cottage and the rest of the grounds, please be respectful of the residents and keep at a reasonable distance.
