It opened in 1896 and was designed by Sir Henry Tanner. It is a 4 storey building stretching across the full width of the City Square and has a large clock tower on top of it.
It has a classical design and has a number of allegorical statues high on the walls.
Two entrances near to each end of the building are flanked by statues of classical figures holding scrolls and writing implements, presumably in preparation for deliver by the post office. The wall in the centre of the building has statues of four figures on columns representing art and science.
It became an English Heritage
Grade II listed building in 1974.
These days the building holds two restaurants on the ground floor and apartments on the upper floors. Standing in front of and flanking each entrance are four statues of historical figures.
