The Central Congregational Church of New Salem was built in 1854. It is a Greek Revival wood structure built by George Howe. It has white clapboard for sheathing and has a tower and steeple on the front edge of the gable end. The church was restored in 1986 to its 1800 configuration.

The construction of this church was a result of the First Church of New Salem joining the Universalist denomination in 1823. This division in church had members being split between the two churches. The people formed the Third Congregational or Orthodox Congregational Church in 1833. Services were held in the New Salem Academy building and Town Hall. This congregation formally organized in 1845.

At one time there was a church tax, however with the final separation of Church and State in Massachusetts the First Church (Unitarian) was unable to continue financially. It ceased holding services in 1845. A local builder, George Howe constructed the Central Congregational Church. Today it is part of the United Church of Christ and worships on Sundays at 10am.
