The mural was placed on the front façade of the courthouse as a memorial to the pioneers of the Colville Valley who, beginning in 1825, settled the valley, farming the land, harvesting the forests and mining the minerals which made the valley what it is today, a vibrant, prosperous community.
The courthouse, in part a WPA project, was completed in 1938 (or 1939, according to some reports). Initially, the intent of the county was to refurbish the old building, but eventually it was decided to raze the old court house and build anew. We must assume that this memorial was part of the original construction.
To the beautiful Colville Valley in 1825 came those hardy pioneers who through their fortitude, perseverance and industry have wrought from the earth its vast mineral wealth, have hewn from the forests the lumber with which to build and from the soil have reaped an abundant livelihood, making this a thriving prosperous, progressive community.
Honor to the Pioneers who broke the sod that men to come might live
