We had seen Smokey earlier on the trip and felt we were making good time, but, once again, he had somehow gotten ahead of us. We found him waiting patiently on the southwest corner of Highway 200 and Central Avenue, near the crosstalk. It was April and had been raining. As a result the fire danger was so low as to be non-existent. Smokey, in order to conserve his time and energy, hadn't even bothered to put up the "LOW" sign between the "Fire Danger" and the "Today!".

Smokey the Bear will turn 80 years old on August 9th, 2024. He was born in 1944 as a new member of the Forest Service to teach people about outdoor fire safety, and preventing forest fires. His signature message was "Only you can prevent forest fires".

Every time I see Smokey Bear I remember still the lyrics I sang as a child.

Smokey the Bear, Smokey the Bear.
Prowlin' and a growlin' and a sniffin' the air.
He can find a fire before it starts to flame.
That's why they call him Smokey,
That was how he got his name.
