The central Cedars, built in 1914, is an important milestone in the evolution of hydropower technology. Indeed, it is the first modern plant in Canada and marks the beginning of the widespread use of vertical generating units. It is located on the St. Lawrence River.

This comes from a small turbine auxiliary power unit of the Central Cedars. It was built by Wellman Seaver-Morgan Co. in 1914. She turned to 1500 rpm. All three led a generator turbines of 1.25 MW, fueling exciters and auxiliary services.

During the construction of the Beauharnois, the flow in the natural riverbed declined. The three groups turbines auxiliary generators are inefficient, their production now loses interest. Today the Central Cedars, ancillary services and excitatory feeding is provided by regular generating units and, if necessary, by the Hydro-Québec network.
