The interior, however, has doubtless undergone major renovations over the years as the building was adapted for new tenants and new businesses. Today the building houses, among others, the
McSweeney Company Dinner Theatre and the
Tide & Boar Gastropub on the ground floor.
The Tide & Boar Gastropub was featured on the November 5, 2013 episode of
You Gotta Eat Here!, along with two other gastronomical emporiums in the area. An award winning restaurant, it has been named one of Canada's Top 50 restaurants by Mclean’s Magazine and one of Canada's Favorite Bars by Air Canada’s
Enroute magazine. We now wish that we hadn't eaten not long before passing the Tide & Boar Gastropub, as we missed the opportunity to sample their offerings.
Also in the building is what was the first electric elevator in the area. This alone turned into a bit of a tourist attraction, certainly attracting more customers to the store in its early years. Those early years, incidentally, began with the building's construction in 1901.
The building, of Italianate design, was designed by J. C. Dumaresq and was built for Senator Peter McSweeney Jr., a Liberal Senator from 1899 to 1921, who previously had been in business with his brothers, Edward and Thomas.
Episode 6 - Season 1 - November 5, 2013
A Moncton, NB joint, the Tide and Boar prepares everything in-house, from the famous Boar Poutine, right down to the ketchup. And if that’s not enough, you might want to try their very own uniquely Canadian take on tiramisu, the “Beeramisu.”
