This fort was built to protect a Portuguese slave trading outpost established in this location in 1588. It's directly over the river Cacheu.
It's a small fort, painted in white, with a single gate. It's shaped as a square, about 25x25m. Walls are 4 m high and 1 m thick. It has 16 guns, some of them are still on the location.
Inside there is a collection of old colonial statues. The gate is closed but the keys guardian will probably be around and will let visitors in for some little money. 2.000 CFA will be asked, but 1.000 CFA will do it. Perhaps less.
