Description:
NB - see new requirements below under Instructions for Posting an NRHP Historic Districts Contributing Building

This category is to list structures cast in a supporting role for National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) Historic Districts as 'contributing structures.'
Expanded Description:
The U.S. National Park Service defines a Historic District as:
"a geographically definable area, urban or rural, possessing a significant concentration, linkage, or continuity of sites, buildings, structures, or objects united by past events or aesthetically by plan or physical development. A district may also comprise individual elements separated geographically but linked by association or history."
When an NRHP nomination for a historic district is submitted to the National Park Service, the narrative separates the structures within the district into 'contributing' and 'non-contributing' structures. 'Contributing' structures are buildings, sites, structures or objects adding to the historic significance of a district.

To waymark a structure, it must be designated as a 'Contributing structure or building' to a historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Waymarks should give a sense of the Historic District they are contributing to. Ideally, your contributing building should be specifically mentioned in the NRHP narrative. Many states have their NRHP narratives accessible via the internet. Some internet resources are posted in the category forums.

The National Park Service research portion of its website is the official web source to obtain PDF datasheets of contributing buildings/structures of Historic Districts from the NRHP Nomination Forms and can be accessed via the National Register of Historic Places NPGallery Search Database. *Note* Not all Historic Districts have been digitized into PDF documents accessible on the NPS website and a few states aren't part of the database inventory but hopefully will be in the near future.

You may also enjoy browsing an interactive map containing thousands of individual NRHP listings and Historic Districts throughout the United States (zoom in to a town or city and click on a yellow dot which will pop up a window that contains info regarding the NRHP building along with any links to the PDF datasheets).

Instructions for Posting a NRHP Historic Districts - Contributing Buildings Waymark:
As of November 24, 2020, contributing buildings that have an individual listing on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) will no longer be approved. Further, any that should slip through the initial review process on or after November 24, 2020 and be later found to not adhere to this requirement will be reevaluated and declined.

To list a waymark in this category, the structure must be designated as a 'contributing building' or 'contributing structure' in a historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).

At least two photographs of the contributing structure are required. More are better.

The short and long descriptions should match the importance of the building. For example, if you were waymarking the Empire State Building, the long description should be longer than one line. But if it's just an example of a Craftsman home in the district, a photograph in the long description may suffice.

The title of the waymark should be Name of building/structure - Name of District - City, State
