Description:
A train caboose was usually the last car on a freight train, goods train, or passenger train, used as crew quarters or as a brake car at the rear of the train. In some parts of the world, these cars are called "Brake Vans" or "Guard Vans"

This category is for the logging of permanently displayed train caboose cars, brake vans or guard vans.
Expanded Description:
This category is for waymarking individual train cabooses which have been placed in a permanent location for reasons other than railroad storage. Cabooses may qualify if they are on permanent display in a public park, used as any sort of stationary office, shop, home, motel, food service facility, or other facility. Other cabooses in use may qualify as well as long as they are in a location permanent enough to be easily found by a visitor (i.e. on a scenic loop railroad with hourly stops at a station).

Locations that have more than one caboose should not be lumped into one waymark. Please list each caboose independently.

Cabooses parked on a side rail line or cabooses still in use on a rail-line do not qualify for this category.

Instructions for Posting a Train Cabooses Waymark:

    Naming your Waymark:
1: Descriptive Caboose Name. This should be the rail line the caboose was associated with or its location name.

2: The road number (id #) of the caboose if available

3: Include a city/town/area name in your waymark name for ease in category browsing.

Example:
Descriptive Caboose Name - Caboose ID Number (if available) - Town, State, USA
B&O caboose C-398 - Avon, Ohio

    Coordinates:
Personally obtained at the caboose location, if the caboose is located indoors please obtain coordinates for the building entrance and note this in your description

    Photographs
Original photos of the caboose and surrounding area

    Long Description:
Please include the following.

1:The caboose history if possible. Including its road names and numbers.

2: Information that is interesting about the surrounding area or the caboose. For example; Can visitors go inside? Are there other things nearby, a playground, other train-related items?

    Variables:
If possible, please identify the type of train caboose on display in the variables. Information on caboose types may be found HERE Information on Brake Vans may be found HERE

Often, we waymark in areas where we're not experts. Some of us even get over our heads when creating categories and end up reviewing when we're not experts, just casual observers of the subject. The Caboose group is lucky enough to have a real-life expert check in on the category every now and then. If this expert has any further information or corrections about your caboose waymark, you may be contacted. Please take these comments seriously and update your waymark with this information, we all want quality waymarks, right?

Please no additional visit requirements are to added by the waymark creator.

Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:
Please visit the location of the caboose, brake van, or guard van, provide visit details through photo or narrative.
Category Settings:
  • Waymarks can be added to this category
  • New waymarks of this category are reviewed by the category group prior to being published

This steel extended-vision caboose sits parked next to the Hollister, Missouri depot. It was formerly operated on the Missouri Pacific railroad, whose tracks went past this station. The Downing Street side of the caboose sports a nifty mural.
