West Virginia Historical Markers
Description:
A great source of pride in West Virginia's fascinating state and local history, the Mountain State's historical highway markers have attracted the interest and attention of young and old for some 65 years. The purpose of this category is to pay tribute to the history reflected in the markers in West Virginia.
Expanded Description:
Historical Markers were implemented in West Virginia in 1937, during the Great Depression, to encourage tourism. The West Virginia Commission on Historic and Scenic Markers worked with the State Road Commission, Works Progress Administration, and Federal Emergency Relief Administration to place 440 markers during the first year alone. After World War II, markers were placed at the sites of most state-run facilities and schools. The West Virginia Historic Commission took over the program in 1963. Since the late 1960s, the program has been managed by the West Virginia State Archives, which is today part of the West Virginia Division of Culture & History.
Instructions for Posting a West Virginia Historical Markers Waymark:
1. The waymark must be an official West Virginia Historic Marker, erected by the authority of the state, a municipality, college, or similar authority. It should be along a highway, in a highway rest area, or some other similar setting.
2. Each marker must include a photo you have taken of the marker. Additional photos showing you or your GPS with the marker and the area or the place commemorated by the marker would be great, but not required. Please do not use pictures from other sites without prior permission.
3. In the "long description" field, please include a brief description of the purpose for the marker. What happened here? You can enter the marker text, or summarize it, or use your own words.
4. The text of a marker usually only hints at the depth of the history behind it. Try doing a Google search on the subject matter of the marker, and if you find a good website, include a link in the optional field provided.

The minimum requirements to be approved as a West Virginia Historical Marker are:

  • The marker text must be accurate.
  • The marker location must be accurate.
  • The marker must be a state, county, or local roadside historical marker.
  • The picture must be of high enough quality to where the words on the marker can be read.
