Description:: Many ancient migratory paths of buffalo and other grazing mammals served as the basis of some of our current routes. Aboriginal people would often use the paths to hunt these same animals, as well as to travel throughout their territories. Early military expeditions and explorers took advantage of the existing routes to travel into the wilderness. Settlers also used these same paths to travel into the new territories. Eventually many of these became the basis of our modern roads.

Expanded Description:

The goal of this category is to locate an existing road that was originally a wilderness route. While you are not expected to waymark the entire route, notable areas of interest along the route will serve as a focal point for your find. A river crossing, evidence of former use of the route, the start or end of the trail, notable cities and structures are a few examples. These roads can be found around the world, and waymarks from other lands are encouraged.

Instructions for Posting a Ancient Traces and Roads Waymark:

Locate evidence of a road that had origins as a migratory route. Not only could this include such things as buffalo roads, but also aboriginal trails and portage routes. Evidence could be a sign, mural, milepost, pass, salt lick, river crossing, portage, or other notable feature of the origins or early use of the route. You need to provide some indication that this route had its origins as a migratory or aboriginal route. This could be a historical sign or a webpage. A good example of this is the Wilderness Road in Kentucky. By the way, we are not talking about roads originally used to drive livestock. It is okay to use those early traces that were used by drovers in later years. Also, this should be a major route and not just something a few miles long.
