Expanded Description:

First Boer War: December 16, 1880 - March 23, 1881

AKA: First Anglo-Boer War, First Freedom War, Transvaal Rebellion, Transvaal War

The First Boer War was fought between the United Kingdom and Boers of the Transvaal; known as the South African Republic while under British administration. The war resulted in a Boer victory and eventual independence of the South African Republic.

Second Boer War: October 11, 1899 - May 31, 1902

AKA: Boer War, Anglo-Boer War, Second Freedom War, Second War of Independence, South African War

The Second Boer War was fought between Great Britain and the two Boer (Afrikaner) republics: the South African Republic (Transvaal) and the Orange Free State: that resulted in a British victory.

The Second Boer War remains the most terrible and destructive modern armed conflict in South Africa's history.

The Second Boer War was the first time that Australian and New Zealand troops had fought abroad. Sixty-two percent of the first contingent were New Zealand-born. They were known as the New Zealand mounted rifles and they wore a fern leaf symbol. Eventually 6,495 men and 800 horses were sent. About 16,000 Australians and 8,000 Canadians fought in South Africa.

As of June 22, 2022
Boer Wars Memorials and Monuments will accept any Memorial and Monument dedicated to those who served in the First and/or Second Boer War. These can be collectively, as a group, or as an individual memorial or monument. This category will now also accept grave markers/headstones located in a cemetery.
