Puzzles in the Real World
Description:
Puzzles in the Real World is all about finding a puzzle depicting a landmark or scenic location in the real world. Photograph the puzzle box of the location represented, then find the location and duplicate the vantage point and perspective as shown on the puzzle box.
Expanded Description:
Jigsaw puzzles date to about 1760 when John Spilsbury used a homemade puzzle world map as a geography teaching aid. Puzzle teaching aid remained the primary use of jigsaw puzzles until about 1820.

It was about 1930 that jigsaw puzzles increased in popularity during the Great Depression.

Guinness World Record: The jigsaw puzzle with the most pieces consisted of 551,232 pieces with an overall measurement of 14.85 x 23.20 m (48 ft 8.64 in x 76 ft 1.38 in), and was completed by 1,600 students of the University of Economics of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Instructions for Posting a Puzzles in the Real World Waymark:
Purchase of any puzzle type is not required.

Acceptable puzzle types include:
Cardboard 2 and 3 dimensional
Foam-backed 2 and 3 dimensional
Wood 2 and 3 dimensional
Brick set models 3 dimensional

Puzzles in the Real World will only accept puzzles that are commercially manufactured, available in retail outlets and having a minimum of 300 pieces.

We will not accept any homemade, custom made, or any puzzle or 3d model of questionable origin.

Two dimensional jigsaw puzzles submitted to this category require a picture that is exactly like the image on the puzzle box, or as near as possible. Admissibility will be determined by the officers. Puzzles in the Real World will accept multiple waymarks per location/landmark for two dimensional jigsaw puzzles. Each must be of a different vantage point and perspective. NO duplication.

Three dimensional puzzles and models generally do not have a background. A picture is required of the landmark taken at the same angle and perspective as shown on the puzzle (or model) box, or as near as possible, but from ground level. We will only accept one 3d jigsaw puzzle and one 3d model of a specific landmark.

REQUIRED:
  • Coordinates for each Waymark shall be for the "spot" on which one is standing when taking the Waymark's default photo (see below).

  • A clear close up photo of the jigsaw puzzle box or 3d model box showing the location/landmark to be waymarked. If photographing the jigsaw puzzle or 3d model in a retail outlet, you must include an overview photo of the display and name of the retail outlet in the long description. Stand the box on the shelf showing the box in its environment.

  • If you are using a jigsaw puzzle box or a 3d model image off the internet, you MUST provide the link, the name of the company who produced the puzzle or 3d model and a clear image.

  • If you own the jigsaw puzzle or 3d model the above requirements are waived. Take a close up photo of the box showing the location/landmark and the company name. If there is information on the backside or as an insert about the puzzle/model set location/landmark, include a photo. Also include a photo of the completed puzzle/model, if available.

  • In addition to the above required photos, you are required to provide a minimum of three (3) additional photos showing the location/landmark. One MUST be a duplicate of the vantage point and perspective of the image on the jigsaw puzzle/brick set box, or as close as possible. Use this image as the default. Also, PLEASE place the photo of the puzzle box adjacent to the default photo.

  • You are encouraged to crop the default photo to match the image on the jigsaw puzzle box.

  • If there is a photo of the completed jigsaw puzzle you can include it in the gallery. This is optional. This is NOT a substitute for a photo of the jigsaw puzzle box or 3d model box showing the manufacture, as required.

  • If there is signage provide a photo. A transcription is encouraged. Additional photos are always welcome.

In the long description include:
  • A minimum of three (3) sentences composed by the submitter and inserted above any quoted text (this will be the first lines of the long description).

  • The 3 sentence requirement is a personal narrative and is in addition to any copied text. Include information about your visit to the location. Is this the first time you visited this location, were you on vacation or are you a local? What was interesting about the location/landmark? You can include information about the history or any unique points of interest. Did you buy the puzzle and did you complete it? Additional comments are always encouraged.

  • If you are using text from any source, you are required to use "quotation marks" and provide a source link below the quoted text. This will distinguish it from the personal narrative. You have the option to use a “blockquote" or similar HTML container, providing the source link within the blockquote or container.

  • An English translation is required, however multilingual submissions are encouraged.

Naming requirement:
NO tildes (~) or double hyphens (--) are allowed in the title.
Include in the title: Use the name on the jigsaw puzzle or brick set box of the location/landmark, city and state/province, etc.
The Country name is optional.

Example: Grand Canyon South Rim - Grand Canyon Village, Arizona
Example: Statue of Liberty - New York, NY
Example: Sydney Opera House - Sydney, Australia
Example: Spotted Lake - Osoyoos, British Columbia
