Planetariums
Managed By: Icon Here Celestial Navigators
Description:
A planetarium is a theater built and used for presenting educational and entertaining shows about astronomy, the night sky, and/or celestial navigation.
Expanded Description:
According to Wikipedia: "A dominant feature of most planetariums is the large dome-shaped projection screen onto which scenes of stars, planets and other celestial objects can be made to appear and move realistically to simulate the complex 'motions of the heavens'. The celestial scenes can be created using a wide variety of technologies, for example precision-engineered 'star balls' that combine optical and electro-mechanical technology, slide projector, video and fulldome projector systems, and lasers. Whatever technologies are used, the objective is normally to link them together to provide an accurate relative motion of the sky. Typical systems can be set to display the sky at any point in time, past or present, and often to show the night sky as it would appear from any point of latitude on Earth. Planetariums have become well-nigh ubiquitous, with some privately owned. A rough estimate is that in the United States there is one planetarium per 100,000 population."

Instructions for Posting a Planetariums Waymark:
The planetarium must be a permanent facility. No inflatable portable domes will be accepted. Sometimes a planetarium is co-located with an observatory. In these instances, you may post the planetarium under this category. Observatories without planetariums should not be posted here, but under the Astronomical Observatories category instead. Check out these links for lists of some of the more notable planetariums throughout the world (click here) (click here).

1. NAME: The name of the planetarium and its location should be included in the title. Generally this should be the city/town, state and/or country -- whatever is appropriate to its location.

Example 1: Fountain of Youth Planetarium - St. Augustine, FL

Example 2: Planetario USACH - University of Santiago - Santiago, Chile

2. COORDINATES: These should be taken from the main entrance to the planetarium or the facility housing the planetarium. If this is impossible for any reason, please state this in your description.

3. PHOTOS: At least two original photographs (taken by you) -- a view showing an exterior view of the entire planetarium or the building in which the planetarium is located, or major portion thereof (this should be the default photo), and a close-up clearly showing a sign with the name of the planetarium or the facility housing the planetarium. If there is no such sign, please state this and the requirement will be waived. A GPSr photo is not required.

4. DESCRIPTION: Include as much information about this particular planetarium as you can, especially its unique features and history. Waymarks with no description will be returned for resubmission.

LANGUAGE NOTE: We recognize waymarking as a global hobby and welcome waymarks from all countries. However, if the waymark is written in a language other than English, an English translation is required. The English translation does not need to be perfect, just clear enough for the Officers and other viewers to understand what the waymark is about. And, as always, please cite your sources. Thank you!
