Sumas Lake Reclamation — Abbotsford, BC
in British Columbia Heritage Markers
Sumas Lake occupied 40 km² (15 mi²) and swelled to 120 km² (47 mi²) during flooding. The lake was drained in order to create more farmland in the fertile region of the Fraser Valley. The Chilliwack River was redirected in 1924 draining the lake.

The present-day cone of Mount Baker is relatively young, perhaps less than 30,000 years old, but it sits atop a similar older volcanic cone called Black Buttes Volcano which was active between 500,000 and 300,000 years ago.
