Description:
The Roman Catholic Church dates its origins to the first century A.D. and now has many thousands of churches in nearly every country of the world. Many of them are of historic and architectural interest, but large, small, new, old, simple or ornate they are all welcome here.
Expanded Description:
The Roman Catholic Church now encompasses some 569 archdioceses and between 2014 and 2782 dioceses depending on the referrence. Whether cathedral or humble parish church, ancient or contemporary, village chapel, or towering spire, all church buildings identified as Roman Catholic places of worship are welcome.

While many Roman Catholic Church buildings may qualify for inclusion in other categories such as This Old Church, Medieval Churches, Cathedrals, or various historic categories, this is a place to include them all, many of which have no other category. Cross-listing is welcomed.

To qualify, the building must be a structure where worship services can be held. Specifically excluded are the many shrines that exist, and small wayside chapels, which have a category of their own.

Provision has been made, however, to include Roman Catholic Churches that are ruins, restored ruins not being used, or buildings that have been converted to other uses.
Instructions for Posting a Roman Catholic Churches Waymark:
NAME: The waymark name MUST follow a specific format -- Offical church name, hyphen, name of city/town and the state (for U.S.) or country. EXAMPLE: Our Lady of the Woods - Hometown, NY; St. Joseph's Cathedral - Madrid, Spain.

COORDINATES: Obtained by GPS readings on a personal visit to the site. These must be taken at a major entry to the building. Coordinates from parking or viewing spots will NOT be accepted unless it is physically impossible to approach the entrance for some reason.

PHOTOS: At least TWO photos are required -- one view showing the entire building, or as much as is practical, and one showing a sign or lettering of the church. If there is none, then some other detail of the building. Additional photos are encouraged, especially of there is architectural significance. Photos of associated shrines are also encouraged. These must all be personally taken photos and entered into the waymark's photo gallery.

NARRATIVE: Provide as much information as you can about this church building. You may cut and paste from web sites, as long as they are referrenced.

VARIABLES: These are provided as an easy way for you to communicate basic information about the church you are documenting. Because not every item applies to every possible waymark, only a few are absolutely required. It is assumed, however, that you will make a good faith effort to provide the information in the variable section. If it appears that this is not the case, the waymark may be returned to your for further information.

RESOURCES: There are a number of on-line resources to guide one in the location and classification of the vast array of Roman Catholic Churches world-wide. Here are several:

Catholic Hierarchy Catholic Dioceses Catholic Dioceses in English and Polish

NOTE: You will be required to note both the archdiocese and diocese where your waymark is located.

SPECIAL NOTE: While the details outlined in our category description, and the requirements listed in the posting instructions, cover the MINIMUM elements and standards for all waymarks in this category, each waymark will also be evaluated by a volunteer reviewer for overall quality and appropriateness. If a reviewer deems that there are deficiencies in some aspect of the waymark, the waymark may be either declined or accepted with request for changes and/or additions in either content or format.

Each waymark will be evaluated on its own merits. We will endeavor to be reasonable and flexible while maintaining the quality standards for the category. If there is a disagreement, try to work it out with the evaluating officer, or appeal to the group leader, but we reserve the right to accept or decline a waymark based on our best judgement.

LANGUAGE NOTE: We recognize waymarking as a global hobby and welcome waymarks from all countries. Because of our international scope, we also acknowledge ENGLISH as our lingua franca. English will create the highest level of accessibility globally. All waymarks must have at least a short description in ENGLISH. We encourage bilingual and multilingual waymarks, but one of the languages must be English. We have volunteer translators to help.

Relying on software or internet based translators, such as Babylon and Google Translate, may NOT yield accurate translations that are intelligible. Use these only when there is no alternative. Although we do not expect grammatical perfection, a waymark may be declined if there the English language is not understandable.

Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:
To log a visit to this waymark, you must post at least one original photo of the site, give the date and a brief description of your visit.
